This is the bottom of Chandler Gorge, a five-minute detour from the Baldface Circle Trail.

The lower sections of the trail are an easy walk through open woods.

South Baldface Shelter, just before the trail turns steep.

The trail emerges onto rocky slabs and starts climbing.

Small ledges like this dominate the next section of trail.

I was experimenting with panoramas - here's a small one taken just above the shelter.

First view of North Baldface.

Northerly view to Mt Meader.

The next panorama is too big to show on this page. Besides, the panels don't line up perfectly and I haven't yet installed real pano-stitching software. So here it is in small segments.

pano part 2: ridge from South Baldface to North Baldface

pano part 3: North Baldface

pano part 4: view north to Mt Moriah

pano part 5: Meader Ridge. That might be Old Speck on the horizon.

pano part 6: Royce

pano part 7: Speckled Mountain

pano part 8: view east into lowland Maine - Kezar Lake visible

pano part 9: more of Maine - I think that's Pleasant Mountain ski area on the right horizon

pano part 10: view south to Baldface Knob

pano part 11: I think that's Kearsarge North

pano part 12: Chocorua faintly visible in the distance

pano part 13: the slopes of South Baldface

I shot a few extra frames just in case the pano didn't work out: here's the ridge to North Baldface again.

And panning clockwise again...

to the Northeast again...

OK, that's enough of that panorama.

View down to the bald spur where I'd shot that huge panorama.

Summit of South Baldface, with a sudden view of Mt Washington.
